How to Care for Your Lawn in Winter

Written by myartclnetwrk on July 4th, 2009

During the cold weather you should ensure that there is no new leaf growth on your lawn as this will make it more likely to succumb to diseases and pests. To do this over time, lower the cutting height of your lawnmower until you are practically shaving the grass. Do this in steps over a few weeks as you don’t want to abruptly remove all the tissue or inflict more damage to the turf. You don’t want to let the grass grow longer than 2 inches during the cold weather.

Administer fertilizer to your grass at the end of autumn. Even though this will not be used by the grass over the cold weather it will be reserved in the roots and will be immediately usable by the grass in the Spring as new growth starts again. If you have bare or brown areas you can re-seed at this time. The seeds will germinate in the cooler weather.

Remove any rubbish from the grass before the severest weather. This may include branches, logs, equipment, flower pots etc. If left on the lawn when it starts to snow these will cover the grass underneath the blanket of snow and cause damage which can make the lawn more likely to succumb to diseases. During the cold season, although the lawn grass grows not as fast weeds will grow faster so you must often pull out weeds to prevent them from harming the lawn.

As well you need to water the lawn throughout the winter, although not as much as you would during the Summer. For most types of grass watering each week should be enough. Some grasses, for example rye grass, Kentucky Bluegrass and tall Fescue grow well in the winter and need more water at this season.

If you use a watering system empty out all the water to stop damage in icy weather. You do not want to get it out the following Spring only to find leaking pipes.

With care your lawn will survive the winter in excellent shape and emerge healthy with new growth in the Spring.  Winter lawn care is not difficult if you stick to our guidelines. You’ll find more information on lawn care and lawn mowers at lawn mower reviews.
